For more than half a century, Andrew Gasaway, Jr. has been the creative force and guiding vision behind Gasaway Gasaway Bankston. With 51 years at the firm, Andrew has dedicated his career to shaping communities, designing spaces that are both functional and inspiring, and mentoring the next generation of architects.
Andrew’s journey into architecture began with a love of watching new structures come to life, a passion that led him to study at Tulane University and later earn a master’s degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Washington University in St. Louis. His design philosophy is simple but powerful: keep it simple, exciting, and functional. Every project begins with the end user in mind, with the goal of creating lasting structures that improve lives and environments.
Among his many achievements, Andrew is most proud of the Downtown Hammond Urban Renewal projects, which served as a catalyst for the city’s broader revitalization. At the same time, he admits his most challenging projects have been the homes he designed for his own family, because designing for yourself means every decision matters.
Beyond architecture, Andrew is an artist who enjoys creating abstract paintings, as well as an outdoorsman who treasures hunting trips with his son and business partner, Bret. Deeply influenced by his wife, Jeannette and by his mentor, award-winning architect John Desmond, Andrew strives daily to live by his personal motto: “Always try a little harder each day to be a better person and better architect.”
Though his bucket list is nearly complete, having traveled the world, piloted airplanes, and even taken to the skies in a hot air balloon, Andrew still hopes there’s one more great building in his future. To him, architecture has been more than a profession, it’s been a lifelong journey, one that he describes simply: “It’s been a great ride, and I hope the journey goes on for some time.”
